Os Belenenses
Rugby Veterans
(Portugal)

Os Belenenses is a prestigious Portuguese Rugby Club
founded 80 years ago and is therefore one of the most traditional
and oldest Rugby clubs in Portugal.
Its Veterans side was founded in early 1983 through the initiative
of Hugo Maia Loureiro. Later on António Henriques Tavares and Luis
Paquete ensured to keep the highly charismatic and traditional
spirit of such a well known side up and running, whilst the club
kept benchmarking the veterans spirit of Portuguese Rugby throughout
the 80s and 90s.
Os Belenenses have long been regarded as a flagship for the Veterans
game in most of the venues for which they had been invited, both
national and international ones such as Madrid, Biarritz, Marbella,
Jimon, Cidade de Lisboa, just to name a very few.
In the mid 1990’s, other players from other Lisbon teams started to
join the Os Belenenses Veterans and in order to increase such a
critical mass, the Lisboa Veterans Team was born.
On the 80th Aniversary of the Os Belenenses Rugby Club the Veterans
team has flourished and gained a new dynamic, mainly through the
efforts of Alexandre Marques, António da Cunha e João Zuquete. The
team has a unique blend of veteran players, which have been a
product of the great generations of players that Os Belenenses Rugby
Club has produced over the decades. Such a new spirit, linked to a
truly exceptional organisation and commitment from their members,
has the mission to preserve the already strongly recognised bond
that exists between the players, the game and such a great club, of
which we are all proud of.
Participating in the “Golden Oldies” is Madeira, as well as in the
Juromenha, Browns and Cascais tournaments is the living proof of our
commitment to the game and the club, which also aims at solidifying
the Belenenses Veterans Team.
It’s with great enthusiasm, that we are looking forward to
participate in the IX European Golden Oldies Rugby Festival. Hereby
we congratulate CDUP for its organisation in Madeira, on the 500th
anniversary of the discovery of such beautiful Island. We are proud
and eager to participate in what we believe it will be a highly
successful event, where the great spirit, humour and joy of Veteran
Rugby will be present and felt during the great days ahead of us.
To all the foreign participants we wish a very warm welcome and the
best of lucks during the competition. To the National teams…..well….
you know what expects you!
See you in Madeira!
