GDD - G. Desp. Direito (Portugal)
Founded
on 1952 by students from Law College at Lisbon University, as they
couldn’t agree with the spirit and model of the typical way of those
times rugby practice.
From that time on, G.D.D gave signs of a determined and combative
team spirit, playing the game to enjoy themselves – even being today
a kind of a club token –, badge that carried us till nowadays as one
of the most important Clubs in Portugal, not only speaking about our
history and conquests, but also and mainly, because of the high
number of young ones inscribed on the Club to learn and play the
game (about 400).
The inauguration of our own pitch in April of 1995 and our first
conquer of a National Championship on 1998/1999 are important marks
to remember, as well as our contribution with 10 players to the
Portuguese Team on the last World Championship in France, where our
Squad gave prestige to Rugby and amazed rugby community.
G.D.D. conquered 5 National Championships, 6 Portuguese Cups and 2
Iberian Cups, as well as a lot of Championships and Tournaments on
the youngest grades, the Cadets Iberian Cup being the most important
of them.
The Club always had strong Seven-a-side and Beach Rugby teams,
conquering many trophies around Portugal, Spain and Italy.
Culminating this sportive building, we can’t forget our Veterans and
Golden Oldies Squads, that we are carried about these years, with
quite a lot of important presences on features and tournaments in
Portugal and Spain, non forgetting some famous 2 tours at British
Islands and 3 or 4 non less remarkable visits to the south of France!
Let’s hope that our presence at Madeira/08 Golden Oldies Rugby
Festival can make possible a nice picture on our “curriculum” to be.
